Introducing DBQ Low and Slow!
To get to know our BBQ teams a little better (and learn some of their tricks…) we asked them a series of questions about how they got together as a team and all things BBQ.
This month, we’ll be sharing with you the answers from DBQ Low n Slow!
The DBQ Low n Slow bbq team are a Perth based team consisting of Craig Fraser and Lee MacIntyre as well as their family members that help at every comp, Tony, Emma, Megan and Wendy. They have competed together since 2017.
Here is what they had to say:
How did your team meet / get together?
We have been close friends for over 30 years and have grown up together always cooking BBQ from our backyard brick/wood fired BBQ’s (built in the 70’s) through the Gas BBQ revolution of the 80’s and 90’s. In 2016 we discovered that Low and Slow BBQ competition was actually a thing and was beginning to take off in Perth so decided to get involved as judges, we judged two charity comps before jumping in boots and all to start competing. So, with no real experience or idea we had our first comp “Smokin in the Port 2017” based in Fremantle W.A. We ended up finishing mid leader board (We were stoked as our goal was not to finish last!) but smashed the People’s Choice Award so were hooked well and truly on the new sport.
What is your most memorable competition (good / bad)? Why?:
We have enjoyed some success since starting out with our first rewards coming from our 3rd comp, “Smokin in the Port 2018” finishing with a Reserve Grand Champion and then finishing with an overall Grand Champion award at the KCBS sanctioned “Chidlow BBQ Festival”, with this comes an invitation to attend the American Royal World Series of Barbecue competition held in Kansas City in September this year. We are currently organising the logistics of such a massive undertaking but wouldn’t miss this opportunity for anything.
We love to cook and get involved in the atmosphere of both the social and the competitive sides of one of the only sports around where you can have a beer with mates and family whilst going up against the best in Perth, Australia and now the world!!
Best of Luck to DBQ Low and Slow at the American Royal next month. We can’t wait to hear all about it!
Keep an eye out over the coming months to hear from more of our teams (and pick up a few tips along the way…).
